applications of information theory to the problem of modelling the implicational structure of paradigms. The chapter concludes with a discussion of the role that implicational relations play, explicitly in conceptions of paradigmatic structure, and implicitly in general assumptions about the demarcation and organization of inflectional systems.

Facility in reading an ancient language requires several competencies: control of the morphology, a working vocabulary of common words and phrases, and a grasp of syntax. This pedagogical aide addresses the first of these by collecting the basic forms and patterns of Sahidic Coptic and presenting them in a convenient format. It is not a full grammar, but a supplement to a grammar. The work provides beginning students with an overview of the morphology of Sahidic Coptic so that they can see the whole of a part of speech or pattern as they learn discrete parts. It offers those who once learned Coptic but have not been able to maintain it with a concise review. While the work is not exhaustive, it is complete enough that it can serve as a useful reference for those who teach Coptic. The work was developed for a course in Coptic at the University of Notre Dame. It is offered in this venue with the hope that it will help students elsewhere.

At the end of Lambdin's "Introduction to Sahidic Coptic" there is a paradigm section much like this one, so it did
look familiar, an indication that good minds can think alike. Sterling's paradigm book is convenient for those times when
carrying around larger books is a hindrance. "Coptic Paradigms" reminds me a bit of those Greek paradigm lists found
in Dana & Mantey's "Manual Grammar" and those verb illustrations in the "Biblical Hebrew Laminated Sheet".
Success in language study involves frequent reviewing of material, and Sterling's work certainly provides a necessary
tool.

This is a very serviceable tool to assist with reading Coptic, provided you already have studied grammar. It presents, in systematically arranged charts, the various morphological forms, so that one can more easily refresh one's knowledge of the grammar or identify lexical creatures spotted out in the wilds of ancient literature.
