If a person has heard Miep Gies speak, this book is extactly like her speech. She may have a co-author, but her voice comes though loud and clear. Like the documentry about Anne Frank, this book does much in dispelling some of the myths that surrond the Frank family and thier assoicates. In many ways, Otto and Anne Frank still dominant the book. In part, this is because Gies had a closer relationship to Mr. Frank, and in part because of the popularity of Anne Frank's diary. First, I should point out that the subtitle of this book is very important. This is not about Anne Frank. It is about Miep Geis, one of the people who helped hide the Franks and the other inhabitants of the attic. That is okay though, because it is a fascinating story. One in which Anne and her family do figure prominently. This is a rare opportunity to read about history from the point of view of someone who actually lived it. From her childhood as a world war 1 refugee, to her time as a guardian of refugees during word war 2, to the bitter sweet feeling of knowing that her life was reaching it's end after having outlived just about everyone else, Miep's story shows how people impact history and how history impacts people. Throughout her life Miep resisted the title of hero, but her story is undeniable proof of how important it is for ordinary people to take action. Sadly 7 of the 8 residents of the attic died after being arrested. However, Miep and the other helpers gave them two more years of life. Two years during which Anne told her story, which, despite it's grim ending, has made her a source of hope and compassion for generations. Now, Miep tells her story, which is every bit as fascinating and thought provoking.

This is perhaps the best book I have ever read about what it was really like to live under the terror of the Third Reich as a Jew, and even a non-Jew. Miep Gies and her husband, Henk, helped Anne Frank and her family go into hiding in Amsterdam, and risked their lives to bring them food and whatever necessities they could find for 8 people in hiding from the Nazis. As a junior in high school English class I read The Diary of Anne Frank and later saw the movie starring Millie Perkins and Richard Beymer. Even as a 16 year old I was moved to tears by both. Now I am 72 and have nearly finished reading this wonderfully written book by Miep Gies: I would probably have finished it sooner if I didn't have to keep wiping the tears from my eyes. This story is heartbreaking and if you have any interest in Anne Frank, the Holocaust, or the suppression of any group of people in this world you need to read it. It is so damn well written. That's all I can say. Read it!

Miep Gies was an ordinary citizen who took an extraordinary risk to try to save the lives of Jews during WWII in Amsterdam. I admire her courage in undertaking this great risk to her own life. The book is told in the first person as a witness to the events of the time. It gives the telling of horrific events that took place a more personal view. I admire Meip for her actions and for the intuition to know how valuable Anne Frank’s notes would be when the time was right. Great read.

After reading the Diary of Anne Frank I wanted to better understand what life was like for the office workers that vowed to protect and feed the 8 people upstairs. Miep's description of what her and her husband's, and the other office personnel lives where like, and the dangers they faced as they tried to do the right and moral thing, will leave you stunned and in awe of how true humanity is played out.

I've studied Anne Frank's story for years as a hobby of mine. I've always heard of Miep Gies, but I'm so glad she published this book so I could read her side of the story. Truly an incredible woman, if only we all could be as brave as her. It's almost breathtaking to hear the risks that this woman and her husband took just to save (or at least try) to save their friends. They are a shinning example of people who radiate humanity.

After reading "The Definitive Edition, The Diary of a Young Girl, Anne Frank", I figured that perhaps I could learn a little more by reading this book by Miep Gies. I think this "Anne Frank Remembered" book is far better than Anne Frank's diary. But of course, to get the most out of Miep's book, I recommend the reader read Anne Frank's diary first. As I said in my Anne Frank book review, it's a pity Anne Frank didn't survive the war to edit her own work. In that respect, it makes Anne Frank's diary somewhat incomplete. There are places in Anne's diary that dragged a little. Whereas in the book by Miep the book is almost perfect and is riveting.

There is a typo in the first third of the book where the word "stood" is mistakenly spelled as "stook". I forget what page number it is on. I'm surprised that the editor's spell-check feature on her computer didn't catch it. And on page 252, on the second paragraph from the top, that entire sentence could be better written in English. The way it is now, there is one sentence for the entire paragraph!

Other than that, the book is well done and I want to congratulate Alison Leslie Gold for helping Miep achieve such a gem of a book.

Should be required history reading... although i know most history does not use just one person's printed word. This is a tremendous story that all should know. I read this about a year after i read The Diary of Anne Frank, and i personally would recommend reading this one first - as i now feel the need to go back and read The Diary again - so much to think about and re-consider.

Read this just to learn about what some people risked to help others, in a horrible time during history. Much of this type of history i didnt know or learn much about in school, and i'm 52. This book taught me a lot about the suffering of those in Holland, along with more about Anne Frank and her family. You will be grateful for your life as it is - no matter what it is.

I am glad this writer shared her story - her brave actions and her life - in this book. Great reading - i couldnt put it down, and finished it in less than 2 days. Enjoy!
