Since The Western Heritage first appeared, we have sought to provide our readers with a work that does justice to the richness and variety of Western civilization.

Since The Western Heritage first appeared, we have sought to provide our readers with a work that does justice to the richness and variety of Western civilization. We hope that such an understanding of the West will foster lively debate on its character, values, institutions, and global influence. Indeed, we believe such a critical outlook on their own culture has characterized the peoples of the West since its earliest history. Through such debates we define ourselves and the values of our culture.

A core text for introductory-level survey courses in Western Civilization and European History and Civilization. Written by leading scholars in the field, this authoritative, time-honored text presents a strong, clear narrative account of the central developments in Western history with a focus on several key themes--the development of political freedom and constitutional government; the shifting relations among religion, society, and the state; the development of science and technology and their impact on thought and social institutions; and the major religious and intellectual currents that have shaped Western culture.

This is a brilliant text in many ways. If you know history, you can see the lines of thinking utilized by the authors to express what is essentially a canonical approach to western history. Let's just say that there are certain essentials in this view, and this text does a wonderful job in covering everything with a good amount of depth, complexity and underlying analysis.

The book is obviously a good foundation for the AP exam, something I took a quarter century ago. When I think back on the text I had at that time, this is a huge improvement. I recall when I was studying that I had to construct timelines because they weren't in the book. This one has them. The idea of the DBQ, document based question, really wasn't ever clear to me at the time. This book makes the use of historical documents a central element in its organization, and includes sample AP test questions. I've always felt though that the AP exam tests whether you've read and understood a classical interpretation of western history rather than simply an understanding of that history. You need to have absorbed the authors' opinions on subjects of history to do well on the test, which is problematic.

A lot of the reviews here are critical of the text's written style. I think the criticism that it reads like a thousand page encyclopedia entry is basically accurate because that's essentially what this text is. I don't really think there is a way around such an approach, and at least this text covers much broader viewpoints of history than just the political-military. You can't achieve everything in a single text, but this book goes a long way in doing so. I also like the comment that a good teacher along with this text can really bring history alive.

A point of criticism is that while the text's title is "The Western Heritage," it really does for the most part stop its coverage at what was defined as Western Europe during the Cold War. This viewpoint is appropriate to the AP exam, but from the perspective of broader European history, it is outdated and worth a rethink. Western history really ought to include the whole European continent...let's say up to the Urals, but perhaps not including the Caucuses. Developments in Eastern Europe are largely ignored in this text. Essentially if you're a Slav (or Magyar or Bulgar), there's very little in this text for you. What is there is included essentially as what is important to German, French or British history (and a bit of Spain), but looking at European history from an eastern view is simply ignored. Given the breadth of world history, to leave these essential European groups -- Slavs are about half of Europe's population -- out of a European history text is a real shortcoming. It is like leaving Cantonese speaking China out of a history of China, removing the Shia'a branch from a history of Islam, or not mentioning the Portuguese in a history of American colonization. This is of course a quibble about the viewpoint of what is important in the study of European history, but I think given the subject, worth mentioning.

This product was so cheap, I bought it for one cent plus shipping, to a total of about 4$! I was expecting some wear and tear, but to my surprise when I received the product(about nine days after I ordered it) it was flawless!
The cover was intact, the pages were pristine, no marks or anything! Completely fresh and all for me! I really love the expediency of this company for shipping their books and the condition!
I highly recommend them and this product!
while the book is some years old, the content is so specific and goes into great detail, it's better than a 2010 edition that I was assigned in class, which was just too generalised and vague. I'm taking an AP European History course and this has greatly helped me, the wording of passages isn't too labourious to read, nor is it boring. It reads pretty well for a textbook and is highly informative!

This is the finest single source textbook on the history of western civilization available today.
I first encountered Kagan, Ozment and Turner's "The Western Heritage" in its second edition. I have reread it cover to cover many times since. History is not boring, but historians tend to be. These men are not!
This volume overcomes the few shortcomings of the second edition. Chief amongst them the lack of a time-line, correlation to principle advances in contemporary non-western history, and contributions of Jewish thinkers of the modern era.
Its coverage is balanced. The authors are recognized, broadly published historians who treat history as a cultural dynamic. For example, prior to reading their book, I did not understand the rise of feudalism out of the ruins of the Roman Empire. Still sensitive topics such as the rise Catholicism and the reformation are covered with an academic honesty that has become rare in today's "politically correct" educational environment where George Washington Carver gets a chapter because he was a freed slave and George Washington gets a paragraph because he owned slaves.
Every chapter has excerpts the source documents of the principle thinkers and/or doers of the time covered. The end of the chapter offers a pedagogy for further study. This resource alone makes it the book worth the purchase price.
I will use this book as a basis for a home-schooling curriculum for my granddaughter. I recommend that anyone interested in this approach also avail themselves of the Prentice Hall WEB site, vig.prenhall.com.

This was the textbook I used in high school as an AP European history student, so I admit my bias. However, I still find it to be an excellent history of Europe--it is thorough, engagingly written, and has a plethora of text and image resources within its pages.

I bought this book but when I did it was drawn all over it had marks all in it. I later discovered a teacher had used it and its been a great help so far my AP grade is a 98.6 because of this text book.

Very good info, a little vague on descriptions of events, not people though. Book is not easy to follow standard reading considering lack of organization of side note and direct relation pages interruptions
