Would be a good book if you were just starting out learning about this part of WW2. But as someone who owns and has read much of what has been written about that part of the war it has fewer details than I am interested in. You get a better understanding of some of the planning that took place regarding the Pacific War which might provide some additional insight. The really interesting part of the book, in my opinion, were the last two chapters after the summary of the War is complete. Those chapters explore, not in great detail, some of the mysteries and conspiracy theories around the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. Part of the new news became available as some papers were declassified by the time this book was published in 1982. Those chapters could have been expanded into quite an interesting book. So for some, this would be an excellent start into understanding the Pacific War while for other readers who already know the basics it is a book that does not deliver very many new insights.

Very thorough. I was trying to actually locate the position of the U.S. Fleet at the time of the bombing, But never felt that I got an exact answer, there wasn't a map of their location then. One might extrapolate, but no exact confirmation of its positions. As a member of the children born of this generation, the book is interesting and gave me some additional insight into the Pacific theater. I'm sure I will refer to it going forward. Thank you.

It is advertised as the best one volume book on the War and perhaps it is. The author does not second guess anyone but presents the facts and lets the facts speak for themselves. The author gets into both sea and land battles and the toil they took on Japan and the allies. He exposes the egos and shortcomings of the leaders from all sides even the countries' leaders. In the last chapter there is a an excellence discussion on the happenings just prior to Pearl Harbor that led to the many investigations, both military and congressional, arising on why the why war started in the first place. The book is very lengthy.

I got this book for a college class and it is outstanding!! A book that gives a great perspective from the different sides, what this defeat or victory did for either side. Highly recommend!

Knowing virtually nothing about the war in the Pacific, I came across the recently published Ambrose book, The Pacific. One review promptly told me that the title was misleading and definitely did not cover the entire war in the Pacific. I was intrigued to gain an overall knowledge of that war, so I researched Amazon and came across this Costello edition. It fit the bill. For one who wants a thorough overview of the Pacific theater in World War II, look no further.

This book is about war, not battles. It gives history with strategy and motivation from each perspective. It's about a contest and I felt, as a reader, there was a scoreboard I could see that reflected the gains and losses and forward thrust of the game. It's history so you know the outcome but it's also about when the participants knew the outcome and how they played the game going forward.
There's books for battles and individuals; this is about the why and the how.

Read this book while recuperating from heart surgery. Very well written--an excellent intro to the Pacific War. I liked that the author included information on Australian participation in the War, something that all too often gets overlooked..
Great one-volume history ofWWII pacific theater. Author voiced not only US, but British, Australian, and Japanese points of view, revealing tensions within each country's commands as well as between allies. Good maps located in one section at back of book, they could have been a little larger and clearer.
