For the nation which first achieved the goal of powered flight, it is amazing just how backward the United States came to be during the years which followed Orville Wright's history-making flight on 17 December 1903

On 27 March 1999, during the NATO bombing of Yugoslavia, a Yugoslav army unit shot down an F-117 Nighthawk stealth aircraft of the United States Air Force by firing a S-125 Neva/Pechora surface-to-air missile. Although dated, this book describes every fighter plane conceived for the United States Air Force and its predecessors (e.g. Army Aeronautical Division, Army Air Service, Army Air Corps, and Army Air Force), from foreign-built fighters used by the Americans in WW1 to the Curtiss Hawk biplanes of the Coolidge era to the epic Mustang, Warhawk, and Thunderbolt of WW2 to the F-86 Sabre and Century Series fighters to the most advanced US air superiority fighter jets. Specifications are provided for every fighter plane design, including unbuilt designs, along with artistic illustrations and photos of built fighter planes. Of note in this book is the fact that the second XP-54 was thought to have flown just once; its actual serial number was 42-108994, not 42-1211, and the flight log shows that the second XP-54 flew 10 times. Also the author forgets to mention that the XP-58 took to the skies for its first flight the day the Allies invaded Normandy, and strange as it may seem, the F-117 is included in this book because it was a tactical strike aircraft and its designation was to cover up its true role. (The book briefly discusses US naval fighters designated under the 1962 Tri-Service designation system for convenience because the Defense Department wanted to create a simplified designation system for American warplanes.)

This is a really nice hardcover reference book of the fighters of the USAF all the way up to the F-117 stealth fighter. The book contains a lot of technical specifications along with photos, sketches, and cutouts of the aircraft.
