In 1853 Christian Sharps left the Sharps Rifle Manufacturing Company and moved to Philadelphia. John Brown also put faith in the Sharps' "miraculous powers. He and his followers carried them on their famous raid on Harpers Ferry Arsenal on October 16, 1859. Christian Sharps was only loosely connected with the plant. Christian once again started his own small shop at 336 Franklin Street in 1856 while living at 486 Green Street. In January of this same year, Sharp secured patent which covered the . Lawrence disc primer.

This very detailed dissertation on the Berdan Sharpshooters, their favorite weapon, and other similar sharpshooter regiments to a lesser degree, gives the reader some interesting information on this famous regiment that is less well known outside of staunch Civil War enthusiasts. The detail on the Sharps Carbine is almost too detailed for all but that enthusiast - with serial numbering of the various weapons, years of production, etc. An interesting read, though, for the reenactor, Civil War history buff, collector or hobbiest!

Berdan's Sharpshooters

DISCLAIMER: I am not an American Civil War buff just an interested reader of the subject.

"Sharpshooter: Hiram Berdan, His Famous Sharpshooters and their Sharps Rifles" by Wiley Sword is a composite book first covering the life of Hiram Berdan and the seconded part covers the rifle. Berdan was an American engineer, inventor and military officer, world-renowned marksman, and guiding force behind and commanding colonel of the famed United States Volunteer Sharpshooter Regiments during the American Civil War. He was the inventor of the Berdan rifle, the Berdan centerfire primer and numerous other weapons and accessories.

Berdan was involved in the recruiting of eighteen companies, from eight states, which were formed into two sharpshooter regiments with the backing of General Winfield Scott and President Abraham Lincoln. His men, who had to pass rigorous marksmanship tests, were dressed in distinctive green uniforms and equipped with the most advanced long-range rifles featuring telescopic sights. Even when assigned to a brigade, the regiments were usually detached for special assignments on the field of battle. They were frequently used for skirmish duty.

The second part is about the military Berdan Sharps rifle was a falling block rifle used during and after the American Civil War. Along with being able to use a standard percussion cap, the Sharps had a fairly unusual pellet primer feed. This was a device which held a stack of pelleted primers and flipped one over the nipple each time the trigger was pulled and the hammer fell - making it much easier to fire a Sharps from horseback than a gun employing individually loaded percussion caps.

The Sharps Rifle was produced by the Sharps Rifle Manufacturing Company in Hartford, Connecticut. It was used in the Civil War by the U.S. Army sharpshooters, known popularly as "Berdan's Sharpshooters" in honor of their leader Hiram Berdan. The Sharps made a superior sniper weapon of greater accuracy than the more commonly issued muzzle-loading rifled muskets. This was due mainly to the higher rate of fire of the breech loading mechanism and superior quality of manufacture.

At this time however, many officers were distrustful of breech-loading weapons on the grounds that they would encourage men to waste ammunition. In addition, the Sharps Rifle was expensive to manufacture (three times the cost of a muzzle-loading Springfield rifle) and so only 11,000 of the Model 1859s were produced.

Overall, I found the book very interesting and highly readable. I am sure this will find its way to the professional Civil War enthusiasts' bookshelf.
