The Ira: A History has been added to your Cart. Coogan reminds us that the present troubles in Northern Ireland began as a civil rights campaign and did not take on a truly militant character until the events of the Bloody Sunday massacre in 1972, in which 13 unarmed marchers were killed, reviving a comatose IRA. The author relates atrocities on both sides as the IRA fought with arms, hunger strikes and funeral processions, while the British countered with prisons, torture and assassination squads.

Good history of the IRA on a year by year basis, but overly erudite for the novice. There are far better introductory pieces on the subject available, ones which cover the Easter Rising

Tim Pay Coogan is the premiere Irish Historian. Absolute must reads, including in the Famine Plot and 1916 and many more.
If you are looking to seriously educate yourself on the topic, this is a must read. Coogan has done his research and shows off every single bit of it. This book will chronical the IRA in it's entire entirity, every bit of it beginning to end, up and down and sideways. If you are board reading my review already, don't bother with this book. The details are amazing, and the characters too numerous to count. The author jumps characters often, and unless you really study this book you will more than likely be lost.
