Boughton House, Kettering, Northamptonshire. The English Versailles’, home of the Dukes of Buccleuch & Queensberry. This remarkable house is a blend of the intimate & the grand, with its village like Tudor period courtyards fronted by the palatial Versailles style additions made by Ralph, 1st Duke of Montagu in the 1690’s. The spirit of a family home goes hand in hand with the magnificent formality of the Great Hall or, the series of State Rooms virtually untouched in 300 years.

Annie Ireson has written a trilogy set in Kettering which I also recommend, especially for local readers. If you like stories where the past and the present interconnect then The White Cuckoo is for you. After I'd finished it, all the layers of the plot settled on top of each other like golden mille feuille as the themes, plots and sub-plots were resolved satisfyingly. The story starts with two teenagers in who have run away, the year 1910.
