The Fringes of Power: Volume 1: September 1939-September 1941 .

The Fringes of Power: Volume 1: September 1939-September 1941: Downing Street Diaries 1939-1955 (v. 1). John Colville. When Colville was a young diplomat assigned to 10 Downing Street as a private secretary, he began a diary that he kept, with increasing gaps, through Chamberlain's last year and through two stints with Churchill, 1940-45 and 1951-55. Since the diaries have already been mined both for Colville's other writings and for Martin Gilbert's multivolume Churchill biography, there are few surprises, but this gives a vivid picture of Churchill at work, with interesting sidelights on events and people.

The Fringes of Power book. I'd sort of inherited John Colville's book The Fringes Of Power from a friend's house clearance and it had been laying around for some time as it is not the usual sort of book I read. it gave me a front row seat to World War Two.

Luck, breeding and talent landed Colville at No. 10 in 1939, first serving under Chamberlain, then under Churchill in and out of London, except . 10 in 1939, first serving under Chamberlain, then under Churchill in and out of London, except between August 1941 and December 1943 when at his own insistence he served with a fighter squadron of the RAF. This is a close, splendid picture of Churchill, whose ascent to prime minister he thought a "terrible risk," and whom he came to see as imperious, impossible, fiercely inconsiderate-and "innately lovable and generous.

by Sir John Rupert Colville. Jock Colville was Churchill’s private secretary. He started at the age of 27 as deputy private secretary, and what’s extraordinary from the outset is that his judgment is so very mature – even though he’s a young man. He’s a witness to another age of politics. These days politics tends to be terribly frenetic and tabloid-drive. t really wasn’t like that then.
