This is one of the shorter Sherlock Holmes stories by Arthur Conan Doyle; it is well written, good plot, enough definition of the characters to make them interesting and the story holds your interest from start to finish. It is not however one of my most favorite Sherlock Holmes stories, and maybe that is attributable to the fact that it is one of the shorest stories in the collection. Holmes' friend had a border at her house, and he is behaving very suspiciously. He and Watson help her out. If you are not familiar with the original Sherlock Holmes, this is a perfect starter. If you like mysteries or detective stories, this will certaily fill the bill. I am prejudiced, but I truely never have read a Sherlock Holmes story by Doyle and not enjoyed it. This would not be an exception. Try it and you won't be disappointed.

As with all Sherlock Holmes cases--rather, adventures or affairs, which is much better anyway--even when too short for the best character developement, unless one reads the many other tales in this wondrous collection, The Adventure of the Red Circle is intriguing and suspenseful. Like many of Doyle's shorter Holmes accounts, The Red Circle allows the reader to develope background and scene colour for themselves, very like the old radio dramas that proliferated in the first half of the 20th century. As an aside, there WAS in fact an old-style radio program as recently as the early nineties, broadcast by the New York Times radio station, CBS Mystery Theatre, hosted by E. G. Marshall.
