Douglas Lockwood's book describes in great detail the two 19 February 1942 Japanese air raids on a virtually undefended Darwin, the first foreign attacks ever on Australian soil. Although 58 raids of lesser proportions would follow in the Darwin area from 4 March 1942 to 12 November 1943, the first two were by far the most devastating; eight ships were sunk, 243 people were killed, and between 300 and 400 people were wounded.
