I was looking for a particular wreck which my great-grandfather was lost in. My sister had found a couple of books that mentioned the wreck and we'd found some information on the internet. But this book had the most detail and was well written. It also included pictures of all three ships (a steamer was towing two barges when they were lost, so they are listed together). The entry ended with a list of sources. Just flipping through, it looks like the majority of shipwrecks include pictures of the ships and nicely detailed descriptions with sources. I was very happy to find this information and would recommend the book to those with a either a specific interest like mine or a general interest in Lake Superior shipwrecks.

Stonehouse is a master when it comes to Great Lakes research & storytelling. This book is more research than storytelling, but it is still great. The synopsis of the wrecks are short, sweet & to the point. Awesome book & highly recommended.

I have owned this book for 24 years and still thumb through it and read excerpts on occasion. It's incredibly informative without being stale. It also manages to not romanticize the stories. I love the little details as well, as in where the crew went back to one distressed ship to save the dog!

Frederick Stonehouse is one of the best authorities on Great Lakes maritime history. I turn to his books to keep my story-writing historically accurate.

Thanks to the author Mr Stonehouse he has given us another fine book of Lake Superior ships who sailed and went down in adverse conditions.
