The Empire State of the South: Georgia History in Documents and Essays. Christopher C. Meyers. This book is a summary, hastily-written essay of an otherwise interesting topic. The text is far too short for Georgia's 300 years of history, and important topics barely get a mention. In fact, a dedicated reader could finish this book in probably about three hours, which makes you wonder how much effort the authors really put into writing it. There are no notes of any kind, which makes the book of no use to scholars and students.

I am a history major and this was a required book for a Georgia History Class. The book was great for its purpose, covering a wide range of topics, and doing so with a ton of primary sources and many descriptive essays. My only complaint is that the documents could be put into context more than just the tine mention at the beginning of each chapter, but overall, it was a useful book.

As a native Georgian interested in Georgia history, I found this book to be a one-of-a-kind treasure trove of Georgia history documents. If you ever wondered how we know what we know about Georgia history, here it is--and more. Early Indians, slavery, women's issues, politics, culture, economics, it's all here. Gives you documents representing various sides of important issues that affect Georgians even today. If you want to know the state, get this book. And get the other book by Meyers (and David Williams), GEORGIA: A BRIEF HISTORY, which gives you a good narrative to accompany these documents.
