This book explores Karchana, a complex Hindu village community of 35 castes and 3900 members living close to the holy Ganges and celebrated centers of pilgrimage in the economically backward, but politically and culturally very fascinating and influential Eastern Uttar Pardesh region. Although classical in presenting a "holistic account" through field work and indology, this work offers a new approach to the problem of "writing culture" based on the concepts of arena, lifeworld, and intersubjective fact.
