My grounding is in Philosophy and Law. Jean Laplanche is the most interesting and persuasive psychoanalyst I've read in recent years, bringing a typically French intellect to topics which continue to be fundamental to the Freudian enterprise and discovery, topics which may have tended to have been forgotten in the USA because of the sociological-economic predicament of immigrant analysts, many of them Jewish, during the Nazi era, analysts beholden to the medical monopoly on therapy in the US, and forced to present credentials as medical doctors. Their intellectual credentials (like Freud's as a Jew studying infantile sexuality, dreams, parapraxes and jokes -- and "talking" -- in a Viennese academic environment strongly biased in favor of mechanistic "Science" -- science descended from Francis Bacon's experimentation and use of Quantity, as distinguished from the Science of Copernicus reflecting Occam's Razor where experimentation is impossible) were subject to hostile examination. Very different are the French in Psychioanalysis Laplanche is a devout student, but is not intimidated even by his teacher Jacques Lacan, and never quits considering the phenomena as well as the investigators of the phenomena. Incredibly accessible, Laplanche sheds light on Freudian psychoanalytic theory, opening its possibilities, which remain relevant to the past, present, and future.

Laplanche was a deep and relatively accessible psychoanalyst and analytic theoretician. Should be more widely read and appreciated. Should be of interest to phenomenologists as well as analysts.
Cesar
New book, inexpensive, fast delivery.

Difficult at times, as one might expect, but a very important voice in contemporary psychoanalysis. Of special interest to the fields of literary criticism, literature, gender studies as well.

This collection of essays is superb as is Fletcher's introduction. I bought this book when it first came out, and I am still going back to it today. Laplanche is, in my estimation, the most powerful psychoanalytic thinker of our time.
