Guy Hocquenghem was born in the suburbs of Paris and was educated at the Lycée Lakanal in Sceaux and the Ecole Normale Supérieure in Paris. At the age of fifteen he began an affair with his high school philosophy teacher, René Scherer. Though Hocquenghem had a significant impact on leftist thinking in France, his reputation has failed to grow to international prominence. Only the first of his theoretical tracts, Homosexual Desire (1972) and his first novel, L'Amour en relief (1982) have been translated into English.

Homosexual Desire book. In his polemical 1978 (English translation) Homosexual Desire, Guy Hocquenghem makes the case that society hates the homosexual, that there is something about him that disturbs society (49). However, this is interesting, because there is no homosexual desire - that is, desire is multiple and not directed toward men or women simply (49-50).

This is a seminal work and required reading for all who have an interest in theory and social mechanics. It's perspective is unique, though in some ways naïve. It's promise is one which we all should keep in mind when thinking about how our society regards the individual.
