Richard Hittleman is how I learned hatha yoga after suffering a neck injury from a car accident in the mid-1980's. My doctor at that time recommended I try yoga to offset the chronic pain I was experiencing.

This was long before yoga became the popular craze it is today and, back then at that time, the only people I knew who did yoga were kind of weird (no offense anybody!). His tone is patient and affirming. Each chapter ends with thoughts for the day which recap the daily lesson or offers other health tip benefits. He provides 3 yoga routines at the back of the book that are all referenced if you need to go back to read the instruction on how to perform a pose.

I have an old old Richard Hittleman book and thought this one might be more up to date. It does include some information on nutrition. But the exercises are virtually identical to the decades old book that I already have. I watched Richard Hittleman in the 1960's and I believe his yoga is still the best. I am quite a bit older now and have arthritic knees but I will be able to adapt many of the moves to my own capabilities.

Richard Hittleman (7 March 1927 – 14 October 1991) was an American Yoga teacher and author who taught Hatha and Raja Yoga through one of the first Yoga television series, Yoga for Health. Richard Lowell Hittleman was born at New York on 7 March 1927, the son of Hittleman and Fillet. Used this book now for better part of 40 years. I am youthful and supple even at 65. You can be too. Start from wherever you are, and just keep getting healthier. This book is great for simplicity and perfect for us Americans. Good for any level, Beginner to Advanced.

When absolutely nothing calms my stressed mind, these simple postures always do the trick. There are short and long version workouts for AM an PM. Also, special situation workouts - for restful sleep (just prior to sleep) - before/after exercise, for back trouble, and many more. An excellent guide, very useful way to learn/persist in the Yoga way.

When I was 17 I hurt my back pretty bad in gymnastics. The only thing that would take away the pain was using this very book. I used it for about 10 yrs then got lazy and quit. I'm back at the beginning again but happy to be doing it again.

I used this book exclusively over 20 years ago it is right on the mark. A lot of the DVD and books out there have you go through 1000 (okay that is an exageration) moves within the 20-60 minute session. With Richard's guidance you gradually move up in progression with postures and positions dailey. Thus less chance of injury. Your body adjusts to the stretching and strenghtening. My only regret is that he doesn't have it out in VHS or DVD. If he does I can't find it.

I am ordering the book again. I am 60 and it is never to late to start yoga
