Bone mineral measurements have been criticized for their inability to clearly distinguish fracture and "nonfracture" populations.

Blinded reading of radiographs increases frequency of errors in vertebral fracture detection. The consistency of bone mass measurements across bone sites was examined in a cohort of elderly Japanese-American women. The study included 744 women of mean age 6. years (age range 47-82 years) who had bone densitometry measurements at the spine, calcaneus, and distal and proximal radius. Bone mineral measurements have been criticized for their inability to clearly distinguish fracture and "nonfracture" populations.

In a study of 1098 women (mean age, 6. years) nonspine fracture incidence and prevalence rates and spine fracture prevalence rates were compared by quintile of bone mineral content at the proximal radius, distal radius, os calcis, and lumbar spine.
