We all talk about "weight loss" and many of us have been conditioned to live and die by the scale. Aim to lose one to two pounds a week so you’re losing fat rather than water and muscle. You may have heard the widely quoted statistic that 95% of people who lose weight on a diet will regain it within a few years-or even months. Set goals to keep you motivated. Short-term goals, like wanting to fit into a bikini for the summer, usually don’t work as well as wanting to feel more confident or become healthier for your children’s sakes. While there isn’t much hard evidence to support that claim, it is true that many weight-loss plans fail in the long term. Often that’s simply because diets that are too restrictive are very hard to maintain over time.

Two major studies last year provided more fuel for a particularly polarizing topic - the role carbs play in making us fat. The studies gave scientists some clues, but, like other nutrition studies, they can't say which diet - if any - is best for everyone. Before embarking on a weight loss plan for the new year, here's a look at some of what was learned last year. Avoid fat to be skinny? I first read about Fats Goldberg's diet in one of Calvin Trillin's books. At the time, I said to myself, "That diet sounds like a pretty good idea." After finishing the Trillin book, it was always in the back of my mind, but I kept telling myself I would start the diet "soon". Well, fast forward to April 20. I decided to get the book, and read it cover to cover in a day. It was truly an inspiring read.
This book is different from other diet books in that it doesn't promise easy results, or give you a timetable for weight loss. Fats instead dispenses practical adviec on how fat people can shed the pounds, and still feel good. I think of this book more as a lifestyle manual. Instead of just changing your eating habits, the book encourages you to change your lifestyle as well. It doesn't make you restrict any food groups (except fat, of course, but you shouldn't be having a lot of that anyway). Fats also doesn't give you an exact blueprint. Instead, he tells you want worked for him, and encourages the reader to modify the plan as it suits him or her.
Bottom line, this book works. Since I started following the tips, I have lost over 30 lbs. I feel great, and am confident I can keep it off. Go ahead and read this. The least it will cost you is the time it takes to read it. The benefits could be immeasurable.
