This will work, if you follow what is outlined in the book. If you have children, I found this hard to do. Making separate meals for yourself is not usually a option.

Richard Heller and Rachel Heller are research and health biologists and professors in the Department of Pathology at Mount Sinai School of Medicine, as well as at the Graduate Center of the City Universtiy of New York. They have also written The Carbohydrate Addict's Diet), and other books.

They state, "This book will guide you in the two most important tasks in life. The first task is to allow the thoughts and feelings that you have held inside for so many years to rise to the surface and be experienced. We call that task Discovery. The second task is to throw off the negative influences of these experiences and to replace them with positive thoughts and feelings that will help you to achieve the goals that you want for yourself. We call this second task Recovery. Together, Discovery and Recovery will lead you to complete your own circle of success." (Pg. 5)

They assert, "If you're a carbohydrate addict, you have a hormonal imbalance (called hyperinsulinemia) that leads you to crave starches, snack foods, or sweets. This extra release of insulin takes place after you eat carbohydrates... of any kind. The good news is that we know what causes this physical problem and we now know how to eliminate the cravings and remove the weight gain that goes along with it." (Pg. 31)

They observe, "Carbohydrate addicts... are vulnerable to conflict because... [they] have a physical imbalance... which causes them to crave starches, snack foods, or sweets. Carbohydrate addicts' bodies are almost always in conflict with their thoughts and feelings. Because of their overabundance of insulin, they often feel compelling or recurring food cravings pushing them, against their desire, to eat. It is hard to be happy, or to keep up your motivation, or to stay in control, when your body is signaling you that you are hungry." (Pg. 55)

They note, "Carbohydrates cause the body to produce the brain chemicals that soote and relax us but, for the carbohydrate addict, this balance is temporary at best. Within a short time, the imbalance returns and the addictive cycle repeats... and repeats and repeats. The goal of this book, and our lives, is to take the feelings and thoughts that cause our bodies to crave carbohydrates and let them in, let them out, and let them go, and with the letting go, move on with our less-addicted lives." It took me a day to read the book. At first I thought the diet was too good to be true, but I found that everything I read in the book was true. My mouthwatering cravings that I continuously had throughout my life ceased withing 2 days. My energy level skyrocketed and my mood swings actually stopped. For the last 10 years I wanted to take off 20 lbs., I never could do it. I just wanted to thank the Hellers for wrtiting this book.

As the author of the first "insulin-conscious" gourmet cookbook (The Gourmet Prescription: High Flavor Recipes for Lower Carbohydrate Diets", I applaud the Hellers' contribution to the current diet debate. Flavor isn't their strong suit, however, and real food lovers will have little to look forward to in the Hellers' recipes. They'd get a boost from the flavor-intensifying techniques (like stovetop smoking) in The Gourmet Prescription!

I first heard about this diet 3 years ago when I was pregnant with baby #3. Recently, after the Heller's were on Oprah, I was reminded of it and bought the book. I have been working out consistently with a trainer for 6 months PLUS following a low fat high carb diet. I didn't loose a pound! After taking the quiz I knew I was Carbo addicted. I studied the guidelines and decided to try it. The first day I lost 3 pounds. I've been on the diet a week and I've lost 7 pounds! The weight is melting off. I have been a little hungry but it's Christmas. A lot of food around to tempt. BUt I've remained true to the guidelines and enjoyed my reward meal every day. It's getting easier. BUy this book. Take the quiz on the website and if you see yourself in the Q&A--BUY THIS BOOK. You will be so grateful to the Hellers. IF you are Carbo. Addicted this diet is the best for you.

I have been on the program since January and already feel more focused. It is easy to follow the plan; and I don't at all feel cheated. But, since I have had a lifelong weight problem (I'm a former Weight Watcher lecturer who has gained all her weight plus another 50 lbs back), needed the workbook to focus of the emotionality of my eating difficulties. I come from a long line of over-eaters; they still talk constantly about food and bingeing. This workbook is really helping me understand myself and put aside the self-blame.
Be warned, this book does NOT contain the Carbohydrate Addict's Program food plan. The authors carefully leave any practical information out of this book, to force you to buy another one of their books to get it. Instead, this book is full of rehashed motivational psychobable (which any dieter has read hundreds of times before) about carbohydrate addiction.
A very disappointing book and NOT worth paying full price for
