Explains the physiology of burning fat vs carbs and proteins, very helpful. He explains why you need to increase your aerobic capacity at only 70% of your heart rate max.

The main pros of this book are that in 2003 it introduced a new way to look at fat loss. Instead of assuming that anyone who exercises and eats fewer calories will lose weight it introduces the idea that hormones control how the body metabolizes food so if a person's hormones are off balance then even if they are starving and exercising they will find it very difficult to loose weight. I think this is an important subject but disagree that this book is worthwhile for people as a workable plan to make them healthier. First, it is very outdated and poorly researched. For example, it states that eating (animal) protein foods results in releasing glucagon which causes higher metabolism of fat versus carbohydrate. This is incorrect, animal proteins cause strong insulin release. I found many other inaccuracies and a tendency to push questionable blanket recommendations without providing any research to support them. For example, he states that food coloring causes stress and the self conflicting idea that many people suffer from adrenal exhaustion despite having abnormally elevated cortisol levels (a hormone produced by the adrenal glands).

I understand where the author's bias comes from, he is a chiropractor (quack) and the back of the book states that he endorses homeopathy and Applied Kinesiology. So I wouldn't expect a scholarly book from him. The fact that he is faculty on a chiropractic school shows the poor quality of these institutions. The book lacks any endorsements by MDs and RDs, further weakening the case that the recommendations are credible. The fact that the book contains material about physical examination interpretations for stressed people leads me to think that the author is writing above his audience. The average person isn't going to have a way to measure these things and won't be ordering salivary cortisol DHEA levels. Since he is targeting this book for laypeople I can understand the lack of citation but since he is introducing controversial ideas it is unacceptable. Even more suspicious is the fact that the only support he provides are anecdotal case histories from patients. The combination of unreliable recommendations and excessive detail on some areas with scant research are a trio of problems that damn the book. Overall I don't recommend it.
