After outlining the basic models of American health care-the technocratic, humanistic, and holistic-the authors follow the thoughts and experiences of forty physicians as they expand their horizons in order to offer effective patient care. The book focuses on the radical shift from one end of the spectrum to the other-from the technocratic approach to holism-made by most of the interviewees. Because many American physicians find such a drastic change too threatening, the authors also address the less radical transition to humanism-a movement toward compassionate care arising from within the medical system.

This is a critical piece in the ongoing dialogue about how we practice medicine and health. Hearing stories of people who have truly changed their minds, hearts, and practices is inspiring and a boon to progressive and "alternative" practitioners.

I read this book before entering nursing school. It is a must read for anyone considering the medical profession. It helps one get perspective on the people you are dealing with. As an FNP student, it helps to ground my practice and approach in the idea that promoting healing versus outcome takes so much more.

This book changed my professional life in a very positive direction. I had many realizations and have begun to study several different forms of alternative healing as a result of the content in this book. Very affirming and life changing for me. I also enjoyed the way it was written with quotes from other physicians and healers.
I highly recommend this book and purchased another copy to lend out to others.
