Ian Hetherington was co-founder of Psygnosis, a company responsible for creating many early computer games. Along with Jonathan Ellis, Hetherington founded Psygnosis from the ashes of the defunct game company Imagine Software where Hetherington was the Financial Director. Working at their Liverpool-based game company, Psygnosis's team was responsible for publishing such games as Shadow of the Beast, Wipeout and perhaps the most famous of all, Lemmings.

Featuring accounts by practitioners living everyday lives, this introduction to Vipassana meditation provides a way for readers to learn more about its benefits. Explained is what takes place before, during, and after a ten-day silent meditation retreat. Each participant follows the same discipline: silence, a basic moral code known as the five precepts, a prescribed timetable, a vegetarian diet, and a commitment to practicing only what is taught at the retreat. This first-person account of the retreat reveals the challenges and benefits of facing reality head-on through direct observation and of learning to observe instead of reacting to thoughts, emotions, and sensations. In addition, the ways in which Vipassana meditation techniques are applied to individuals, institutions, children, prisoners, work places, and fields of science and social action are examined. Although based on the teachings of the Buddha, the practice of Vipassana as illustrated in this book has broad appeal to other religious and nonsectarian audiences.

After taking the 10 day course, this book gives a nice perspective of how different people found it .. It kind of refreshes you with the course again. Sometimes in regular life, we start getting the benefits of this practice and since they become our regular behaviour we don't realize how this practice has helped us to those .. This book reminds us of them
Since this book is a comprehensive overview of all kinds of people's accounts of Vipassana, there are some sections that can get slightly boring .. For me children's section was that one

I didn't enjoy this book and wish I hadn't spent the money on it - however, I may not have read the description carefully enough before I bought it.
According to the independent Buddhist magazine "Buddhadharma," S.N. Goenka is the number one teacher of Vipassana meditation in the world today. He has trained more than 700 assistant teachers and each year more than 100,000 people do a Goenka sponsored Vipassana course.

Due to its nonsectarian, universal approach, Vipassana carries a broad appeal to all those prepared to challenge themselves.

This book is a wonderful glimpse into the world of Vipassana for meditators and non-meditators alike. For those who are already practicing Vipassana meditation, it is a great joy to read how the practice is transforming the lives of others. Because meditation is a gradual progress, it can be easy to lose sight of the changes it has precipitated. However, when we hear the experiences of others, it allows us to get a fresh perspective on our own journey. Every now and then we have to look back and appreciate how far we've come, and consider the path we've learned with gratitude.

For those who haven't sat a Vipassana course, on the other hand, this book offers a hint of the experience that awaits. There's no beating around the bush: it's difficult. However, as S.N. Goenka tells a student in one of these stories: "What you get out of it is what you put into it."

For someone wanting a general overview of Vipassana meditation as taught by S. N. Goenka, The Art of Living by William Hart is good. But for someone wanting an idea of what an intense 10-day Vipassana course of this type is like and how it can affect one's life, these personal accounts by people from all walks of life (business people, teachers, students, prisoners, priests, health-care professionals, etc.) from many different national, religious, and ethnic backgrounds give valuable perspectives.
Perhaps the best perspective on Vipassana in this tradition for someone without the experience of a course would be to have a close friend or relative take a 10-day course with an attitude of open-minded skepticism. After that friend/relative gives the meditation a fair trial for 10 days and then judges its effects over time, the best perspective would be to ask that person, "What was it really like? And how did it change your life?"
This book tries to fill that gap of understanding. The accounts tend to be personal, powerful, and enlightening.
