Citation: Lavdaniti M (2017) Holistic Nursing Approach to Patients with Cancer. Conclusion As hospital nurses we see the patient and their family throughout their cancer journey and are in a unique position to monitor a patient's psychosocial coping and any distress. Providing psychosocial care to patients is essential but can be an over looked part of nursing care. Psychosocial care is part of a holistic patient perspective and allows patients to seek both informational and emotional support from care givers to help them manage their cancer journey. On the other hand, these treatments can cause a large number of side effects, such as fatigue, loss of appetite, suppression of bone marrow (anemia, leukopenia, thrombocytopenia), nausea and vomiting, constipation, diarrhea, alopecia, problems with memory and concentration, peripheral neuropathy, changes in skin and nail, alteration in body image and impaired sexual function.

A holistic approach means thinking about the big picture

A holistic approach means thinking about the big picture. In a medical setting, holistic refers to addressing the whole person, including their physical, mental, and emotional health, while taking social factors into consideration. This could be specific to diagnosis, in which case a holistic approach might consider all possible symptoms; or holistic treatment, which may be very creative and empowers the patient to take charge of their own care.

One of every three Americans faces cancer. With the diagnosis comes a maelstrom of fears about the future and complex decisions about treatment. In this world turned upside down it is difficult to find the right answers, much less be certain that the right questions are asked. It is hard to balance the desire to find a cure and extend life, and the wish to prevent side effects of treatment. At the same time, patients and families must deal with powerful emotions, keep hope for the future, and maintain a sense of meaning in life.Live Longer, Live Larger is a handbook for people who want a supportive companion in their response to cancer or other serious illness. It is based on the experience and hard-won wisdom of thousands of patients and families dealing with cancer: people of differing temperaments, backgrounds, and medical circumstances. Its stories, exercises and tools can help you survive a diagnosis of cancer to live longer, more meaningfully, and with a higher quality of life, regardless of prognosis or stage of disease. Topics covered include:

Conquering fearFinding the right treatment for youUsing hope as good medicineSurmounting barriers to treatmentIncreasing quality and meaning of lifeRedefining your relationship with cancerFinding opportunity amidst the crisisAuthors William M. Buchholz, M.D., Hematology and Oncology, and Susan W. Buchholz, Ph.D., Clinical Psychology, have worked since 1978 with patients and families facing life-threatening illness. Inspired by their patients, they have created a map to help other people successfully navigate the complex world of cancer.

Everyone should take a peek at this ... not just cancer patients. The authors provide insightful analysis and emotional support for patients and families dealing with this life-threatening illness. Chapters cover such varied topics as:

recurrence
remission
risk-vs-reward
positive attitude
crisis = danger plus opportunity

This book includes many short stories about cancer patients' struggles and triumphs. I've read this twice and will no doubt read it again!!!

Offering hope, meaning for lives of cancer patients
"LIVE LONGER, LIVE LARGER: A Holistic Approach For Cancer Patients and Families" offers a compassionate approach to cancer patient care that focuses on the whole person, not just the disease. Through their practice, this husband and wife work with each patient to construct a strategy for dealing with life-threatening illness. Reading this book is like having an unhurried consultation with them.
" Live Longer," outlines the strategy as a plan to extend life beyond its current bounds, and aims not only to treat the individual's malady, but also to heighten a patient's quality of life and engender a greater depth of meaning.
For those who have chosen-and Drs. Buchholz assert that there is always choice-to receive a particular treatment for cancer, "Live Longer" provides instruction on how to maintain a willingness to take one step after another even when it is difficult. This includes guidance on the appropriate application of hope, living with uncertainty, coping with changes in body image, and managing one's modes of energy so as to avoid fatigue.
"Live Longer" offers people with cancer a philosophy of how to live their lives fully.
