Bauer's - Boeing: The First Century - is a great follow-on to his earlier work - Boeing in Peace and War. Although it has much of the same text as its predecessor, it boasts of numerous illustrations to match the text to the Boeing aircraft he describes. A good work well worth the price. Book by Bauer, E. Bauer, Eugene . Bauer was an employee of Boeing and he may have been paid or prompted by higher-ups to produce this story, but that is not a certain fact. Also, that possibility doesn't diminish the fact that this book represents an important piece of Washington State history. As an educator and Washington State historian I can attest to the importance of this book. I was especially interested in the early years of Boeing and its early development of pontoon planes and the production of aircraft for mail delivery.

In this respect, Boeing’s 777, which first flew in June 1994, looks little different from any other jetliner. Designed to fit between the large 747 and the smaller 767, the 777 occupied a special niche in Boeing’s corporate inventory. It was created to compete with the McDonnell Douglas MD-11 (a DC-10 derivative) and the Airbus A330/340. Single Page Previous Page 6 of 6 Next 1 2 3 4 5 6. Like this article?

This is the absolute worst piece of aviation history, I have ever read. My guess is the author's initial engineering background, reflects his inability to write history.

Bauer's shotgun scatterbrained style leaves one lost, as you try to follow where he is going. Alas he has no idea where he is going. The book's random manner totally lacks any coherent structure. It is truly surprising that this book was ever published.

As one who admires Boing, warts and all, this is a pure puff piece. It pulled no punches, as no punches were ever thrown. For much better books, on Boeing, try: Boeing versus Airbus, Wide-Body, Legend & Legacy, and The Sporty Game.

I read the second edition of this book, and based off that I will not be buying the third edition. It was not a very well written book. The chapters jumped around as the author tried to cover everything in chronological order for Boeing and the companies it later bought such as McDonnell Douglas. His accounts of the events are from the perspective of senior Boeing management, and that is the real value of the book. It gives the reader a feel for how Boeing's leadership saw events. That is why I gave it two stars rather than one star. Bauer often leaves out key facts when discussing events, such as certain things with the contract the company did during the strike of 1948. Otherwise, if you want a good account of Boeing's history, read something else such as Flying High or The Sporty Game.
