This story is an excellent read by Tim Crouch. It’s obvious from the very beginning that the author thoroughly researched the source materials on the Wright brothers. What drew my attention was the masterful amount of detail he was able to discover on the place and time of the discovery of manned flight. The author’s coverage of all of the work done by the contemporaries of the Wright brothers both here and abroad serves the reader well in adding an extra amount of detail to the story. The complicated family dynamic between the brothers and the father, the depth of the relationship with the sister all added another level of interest to the story. My only complaint with author was the amount of detail on the family dynamic and especially all of the detail on the father. At times this story got bogged down and got lost in the weeds. There were times I had to skip whole passages to keep up with the story flow on the accomplishments of the brothers. The first three chapters of the book could use some good well placed editing. An accomplished editor would have tightened up the manuscript without diminishing the story that we have here or the accomplishment of the author.

I learned much about the two Wright brothers & how their tinkering & making adjustments to their various flying machines 'broke ground' for man to lift off and fly like a bird. Good read about their lives. However, the author could have better summarized much of the endless record of their father's struggles and fights in the United Brethren church. It showed why Orville & Wilbur stubbornly used the courts to fight for patents and to protect their inventions from being stolen--because of their stubborn, striving father; however, the author about lost me, while digressing from the boys' story to their father's struggle.

In this flawless biography of the Wright brothers, Tom Crouch (chairman of the department of aeronautics at the National Air & Space Museum of the Smithsonian Institution) explains the background, personal and technical factors behind the first successful powered flight at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina on the 17th December 1903.

The first aircraft is in the Smithsonian and says on the label, "By original scientific research, the Wright brothers discovered the principles of human flight as inventors, builders, and fliers they further developed the aeroplane, taught man to fly, and opened the era of aviation." Crouch looks at each of these elements but goes further in showing their persistence, strong family ties and complete integrity. I had the feeling that if any of these pieces was missing it would never have happened. Altogether a great book.

As a very minor point, it would have been useful to have diagrams to help follow the more technical aspects of the design changes.

I bought this book as an alternative to the higher priced books on the market about the lives of Wilbur and Orville Wright. I am not disappointed in the least. The author is more than qualified with his own life experiences and history to share this great story with us in a manner that is authoritative, spectacular in detail and, most of all, knowledgeable of his subject. In the case of history, you do not always have to have the most recently published book to find a most informative and credible account. This book proves that to me once again.

This USMC pilot was instantly caught up with this narrative. I suggest it highly to all those who love the story of flight.
Make no mistake about it, the Wright Brothers were scientific geniuses who were intellectually way ahead of others. The gutsy
decision to rework all of the previous 'constants' thought to be accurate which made up the math formula to calculate LIFT was
the stuff of genius. I was told in the 1980s by officials of the Lear Jet company that their calculation of the coefficient of lift with
their rudimentary instruments was highly accurate when compared with technology of the Lear organization.

This is a book that I wanted because it is written by a friend of mine who has immersed himself in the history of flight for many years - he knows more about the subject than anyone else alive today. The book itself is very readable, and it tells the story of the Wright Brothers in great detail. As for the book, it was labelled "used", but it was essentially like new. I am very happy with my copy of this book that will make a fine addition to my library.

It's an interesting telling of the spectacular technical feats of the Wright's, followed by the post-success business bungles that effectively removed them from relevance in the development of aviation. It's a well trodden path which many innovators continue to take. The author does an Ok job of storytelling, but lapses into pre-revelatory or repetitive paragraphs that better editing should have cleaned up. Overall, a good read that could have been clearer and easier to get through
If Wilbur and Orville Wright are your heroes, then you will find this book fascinating. The struggles of two entrepreneurs cutting first teeth to rightfully patent the machine that changed the world is a fascinating ride through the challenging business enterprise they were forced to endure. You will realize why starting a business today is no different than it was 111 years ago. Dealing with the Federal government just as challenging today as it was in 1908. There is so much to pick up, it is a graduate school lesson in studying the behaviors of the two genius men who first gave the world controlled powered flight. I hope you will agree.
