The first chapter discusses the system design process. Our approach is to provide the skills to quickly get up to speed to operate the internationally popular Atmel AVR microcontroller line by developing systems level design skills. We use the Atmel ATmega164 as a representative sample of the AVR line. The knowledge you gain on this microcontroller can be easily translated to every other microcontroller in the AVR line. The book concludes with several detailed system level design examples employing the Atmel AVR microcontroller.

This book was regrettably chosen by one of my professors for an Embedded Systems class. I'll cut to the chase, this book is awful. There seems to be a section of the book that is missing, it seems to just drop off topic randomly and then pick up in a completely different topic. My recommendation, if you're looking for a book to learn about programming Atmel AVR micro-controllers, pick a different one. You will not learn much from this one so don't waste your money.

Definitely a book for someone with a strong background in electronics and micro controllers. Does not hold your hand or guide you in any way. Some chapters even preface that if you dont know something you should read such and such book before continuing. Also there are some typos / miscopies on some of the practice problems for chapters 2/3, possibly others i haven't gotten to yet.
