He sailed from San Francisco in 1895 to join a ship equipped to spend brief Arctic summers whaling & long winters icebound...for 3 years, he helped rescue a shipwreck crew & in turn became shipwrecked himself. As a member of the engine room crew & later a harpooner...after catching the famous Whistling Whale & surviving a nightmare voyage with a shanghaied crew, he settle in an Arctic Village & married an Eskimo, where he became a trapper & trader
