Introduction Tracing modernity This anthology examines the heterogeneous modern culture of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and traces its manifestations in architecture and the city. The choice of the hackneyed epithet ‘modern’ as our theme was not done out of a fin-de-siècle preoccupation with labels, though the constant desire for branding and rebranding one’s own time is an unmistakable characteristic of the modern.
