Don’t read this book if you don’t want to know how the sensors work. The aim of the author is to provide comprehension, samples, general solutions for use, tables of practical data, all in volume. He succeeds to provide an enormous amount of information. It’s a wonderful illustration of physics. a very interesting and good book, useful for experimental physicist or engineer even for theoreticians to see how theory is applied practically.

I think this book is great. It has a good portion dedicated to introduction to instrumentation and a lot of what I thought was fairly obscure knowledge about different sensors.

I think this book is great. It wasn't as in-depth as I would have liked when it came to how individual sensors might be designed, but that would make it into a pretty heavy book in retrospect.

I have my doubts about whether Fraden had a copy-editor review this book before printing. It's full of egregious typos and downright bizarre terminology (OPAM = op amp).

I don't mean to be to harsh, I think English isn't Fraden's first language and he must come from a non-EE background. This book contains useful, but poorly-presented information. You're probably better off figuring out what you want to sense and reading some appnotes instead.

This book is a good reference book to many different sensors that I was looking for. As an engineer looking to use these types of sensors, it gave me a nice overview to quickly move into the design and application thought process. Thanks

I recommend for anyone that is using sensors or would like to understand a little more than basics of sensoring.

The book doesn't go into enough technical details on the topics it covers. Basically, the book is an overview and doesn't go into great detail on any one topic. Very disappointing purchase overall.

This book assumes that you that you already know circuits well, and it doesn't explain things clearly. Most explanations are terse and skip many details or logical reasoning. I didn't learn much from reading through this book, and some of the assumptions that the book makes about flow sensors (using Bernoulli's equation for turbulent/nonlaminar, lossy flow) are just blatantly wrong. Mostly dense theory, and extremely unhelpful as a reference or educational resource. Not recommended. You're better off buying Introduction to Mechatronic Design (Carryer, Ohline, and Kennedy), which is much better at explaining and showing how certain sensors work, and actually how to incorporate them into real-world applications.
