Nine crossbred calves were selected and divided into three groups on the basis of their body weight and genotype. The calves of group A were reared by cow milk, group B reared by strained soymilk and group C reared by unstrained soymilk. The soymilk-fed calves consumed less milk than control calves to meet the weaning criterion owing to promoted starter intake. Feed-related weaning costs dropped by about 35% when soymilk was fed because whole milk was about 50% more expensive than both soymilk and starter concentrate. Feeding soymilk at up to 50% of the milk diet maintained health during the first 2 to 4 wk of age when the neonate calf is highly sensitive to nonmilk proteins and plant antinutrients.

Milk and milk alternatives. Not too long ago, the only thing you could expect to drown your cereal in was whole cow's milk. Now, cow's milk comes in all sorts of varieties: whole milk, 2 percent, 1 percent, skim (fat-free), and even lactose-free milk. For people with dietary or allergy concerns, there are also alternatives to cow's milk. Coconut milk is more accurately referred to as "coconut milk beverage" because it's a more diluted product than the type of coconut milk used in cooking, which usually is sold in cans. As with other plant-based milk alternatives, coconut milk often contains added thickeners and other ingredients.

Feeding of whole milk for raising calves is expensive in a country where demand of milk for human consumption is so high. Under these circumstances, we have to pay great attention on low cost alternate calf feeding programme. Considering these, the present research work was conducted to monitor the quality of soymilk as milk replacer for raising calves. Quality of soymilk was determined by conducting growth trials with crossbred dairy calves belonging to Bangladesh Agricultural University Dairy Farm, Mymensingh, Bangladesh. From the results, it was concluded that soymilk or combination of cow milk & soymilk as milk replacer could be used successfully for raising dairy calves. However, combination of cow milk & soymilk as milk replacer would be more appropriate to calves rather than feeding soymilk alone. This book will be helpful for those who are interested to raise the calf economically or those who working with calf raising facilities or calf feeding programme.
