Carroll Smith (1932–2003) was a successful professional race car driver, engineer, and author. Carroll's books are highly regarded among amateur race drivers and engineers. Born and raised in the northeast United States, Carroll Smith began racing MGs while attending the University of Rochester

Smith believed that any discussion of vehicle dynamics must begin with a basic understanding of the pneumatic tire, the focus of the first chapter. The racing tire connects the racing car to the track surface by only the footprints of its four tires. Through the tires, the driver receives most of the sensory information needed to maintain or regain control of the race car at high force levels. The second chapter, focusing on suspension design, is an introduction to this complex and fascinating subject. Topics covered include chassis stiffness and flexibility, suspension tuning on the cornering of a Winston Cup race car, suspension kinematics, and vehicle dynamics of road racing cars. Chapter 3 addresses the design of the racing chassis design and how aerodynamics affect the chassis, and the final chapter on materials brings out the fact that the modern racing car utilizes carbon construction to the maximum extent allowed by regulations. These technical papers, written between 1971 and 2003, offer what Smith believed to be the best and most practical nuggets of racing chassis and suspension design information. Editorial note: Carroll Smith passed away before he could complete this, his last SAE book. The SAE Publishing Technology Editor put the finishing touches on the book so that it could be published in honor of the service Carroll Smith made to SAE. An obituary and tribute to Carroll is included in this book.

To start, SAE members get this book for $80. Considering there are 27 of the BEST technical papers selected from thousands, at $15-$20 each, this is a tremendous value! If you're in university, you can xerox the SAE papers in your library for free.

There's more to suspension design than roll centres, wheel rates and camber curves. It gives a much higher level insight to suspension and chassis design than even Carroll's earlier books - above undergraduate level. It's the difference between a five body model and a 2D analysis. Having my B.Sc in automotive engineering, I'm confident in recommending this book. It's nice to have a well-bound copy, and I refer to it frequently.

I don't mind spending a 100 bucks on a book (on anything for that matter). Publishing this pile of copies in honor of racing engineer legend Carroll Smith is one thing, but asking 100 bucks for it...

Apparently the Society of Automotive Engineers doesn't know that it takes more than a Xerox machine to publish a book. Due to the obvious xeroxing some of the text and a lot of the figures are just unreadable. It reminds me of the "books" I had to buy for college.

I can only hope that the SAE will catch up with the advances made in the field of publishing and until then please buy something nice for your money.
