This is the 7th edition of the NOLO IEP Guide. It is of paramount importance to always check the newest edition before attempting to negotiate the best IEP for your child because there are sometimes (as now) recent court cases and decisions that will affect what you are able to ask for (or demand, rather). A new U.S. Supreme Court case, dealing with "appropriate" education measures, is explained in this edition as well.

No matter what book or guide you reference to help you, it is a long, hard slog through the law to sift out the opportunities available for your special child. And then your school district may not, in this era of the pinched penny, be able to meet your requests. After four years of reading everything I could get my hands on to assist in the writing of my grandson's IEPs, I settled on picking up the Complete IEP Guide first, as the fastest and most reliable source of information. But if you are advocating for a child with autism and are, as I am, unable to afford an attorney to help you in your face-to-face with the "powers-that-be" who decide what requests they will and will not grant for your child, then contact your state Autism Society and ask for the name of a parent advocate. These are people who have been-there-done-that for years and will not only attend your IEP meeting with you, but will help you prepare thoroughly by making the most of the intimidating forms and information in the help guides - even this one, which is in my opinion the best.

Good luck and God Bless!

I just had my son's IEP meeting and the meeting went very smooth and I got everything I requested. This book will explain the process and also provides forms to keep you organized. Typically our meetings ran 3-4 hours, this time 2.5. The class visitation form & IEP blueprint are easy to read and easy to create your own based on examples in the book. If you are just starting out with IEPs, this book is will prepare you well. Always come prepared, the staff and teachers will know you are serious. Great advise in this book.

I would recommend this to any parent in need of assisting your child's school with their IEP. Many parents don't have access to enough info and this book touched on all the major areas in which a parent should be educated. Many helpful tips! I would highly recommend this book especially for those struggling with your child's IEP at school.

...we had this book ten years ago. Our daughter was diagnosed with ADD in 1991 and it has taken us 10 years to get our school district to put her in a program that they refused to even tell us existed. We have fought tooth and nail over that time to put her in a program that would truly address her needs. It took her getting in trouble and put on probation for us to even find out what resources truly existed for her. Once we had the key words (thanks to a caring Probation Officer), the doors opened wide. Meanwhile, we wasted all of middle school and her freshman year of high school, as very little was done for her. This book has all you need to start getting answers and solutions. If you even suspect your child needs special accomodations or special education, you will find this the best $24.00 you could ever spend.

We are preparing for our first IEP. This book was extremely helping in giving step by step guidance to the parent. It gives you the laws and the descriptions of them but not in an overwhelming manner and has excellent tips on how to advocate for your child. I am feeling much more prepared after reading this book.
