This is a great book that focuses on how students learn mathematics. The only reason I am not giving it 5 stars is it's difficult to read. The examples are great but the regular text uses words in such a way that you have to keep rereading. Unless you are the type of person that is comfortable with small and technical writing you will not enjoy reading this book. The book also provides a CD that focuses on Social Studies and Science.

I read this book for an Instructional Leadership course. If you want to become a better instructional leader, especially in unfamiliar subjects, this is a great resource. It is also a good for professional development for teachers who want a better understanding of how students learn.

The book is more of a sale's pitch for the company. I believe the professor works for the company or at least did in the past. Our professor choose this as one of our required readings. If you're a professor, I think there may be better choices out there. This book however, is better than the other two used in class.

Though not necessarily an easy read for those without a background in recent decades of research in developmental and cognitive sciences, these seminal reports offer educational leaders including policymakers, administrators and teachers a way to reconceptualize education so as to better serve learners in the 21st century. That is, to go beyond conceptions of education that focus on state testing to education that focuses on current understandings about how people learn and the development of competent performance.

Specifically, this content focused report assists those who wish to further develop pedagogical content knowledge (PCK) in the area of science teaching. This text is one that may be used to help science educators develop adaptive expertise, which has been termed the `gold standard' for teaching.

Importantly, as with other reports by the National Research Council, for example How People Learn: Brain, Mind, Experience and School, the authors focus on three established principles of learning:

1) Learners come to the science classroom with preconceptions about how the world works and these must be engaged.

2) Learners must be guided to develop - a deep foundation of knowledge about science, a meaningful conceptual framework, and an organization of knowledge so as to be able to apply the information about science.

3) Learners must be assisted to control their own personal learning about science through the development of metacognition.
