Finding the fit between you and an environment is integral to building a satisfying and successful career. In 1909, Frank Parsons, who is known as the architect of career guidance and counseling services in the United States, developed the framework of Person-Environment Fit (Lapan, 2004). This model supports the idea that people should develop a clear understanding of themselves, gain knowledge of occupational (or educational) opportunities, and engage in a decision-making process that would incorporate this knowledge of self and occupations. As the workplace becomes increasingly complex and competitive, the need for more comprehensive career counseling services has become imperative, not only to direct youth in positive ways but to help them make effective transitions into satisfying careers. In this text, Dr. Lapan provides an integrative contextual model for the career development of children and young adults. His model offers a framework for exploring how fundamental career constructs develop within an interconnected network of cultural, social, economic, and political contexts. Exemplary career counseling constructs and techniques for all educational levels are provided to link theory and practice in a concrete way. Professionals will learn the skills necessary to empower young people to make proactive, life-affirming career choices that enhance personal satisfaction and well-being.

I found this book provided useful and relevant information in a straight-forward and practical manner so as to be easily interpreted by parents and counselors alike. Overall, it's an excellent resource for those who work with adolescents in exploring career options. I only wish this book were made available to my parents and school counselors when I was in high school.
