Rena Palloff and Keith Pratt have provided another essential resource for the field of online teaching and learning that is a must-read for anyone working with faculty or teaching online in either higher education or K-12. This book might be good for someone writing a paper about online learning but, as someone looking to create an online learning course, there was very little, if anything, I could use or apply. To be honest, I stopped reading after 100 pages and started skimming because the dry, academic writing style combined with little actual specific information left me bored.

I found that this book was more so geared towards those who develop training and other professional development for faculty and instructors who teach online.

If you are interested in teaching online, and you are wanting to learn more about the importance of building online communities (i.e. discussion boards, etc.) you may want to consider her book "Building Online Learning Communities".

This book is for those who are charged with helping other instructors develop their online technical delivery skills. Unless you are looking for assistance in designing and developing new virtual instructors this book will probably not be of much value to you. If developing others into online instructors or growing a team of online instructors then this book can assist you to that end.

Palloff and Pratt have written several books about online teaching. This book is especially helpful for those just getting into teaching online.

If you are just entering the field or are an administrator looking for ideas regarding how to set up evaluation or development efforts for new online instructors there are a few good gems in here. However, if you have been teaching the online or hybrid paradigm for more than a couple of years there really isn't anything innovative included.

Heavily focused on prepping new teachers for the online paradigm and how to set up faculty training of the technology aspects but tends to crutch on "just ask someone who has done it before" mentoring model, rather than providing any substantial guidance in the book itself.

My expectations were higher for the book based on the description and the authors. The key nugget is the rubric chart in the back, which is good for people who have no idea were to start in the evolution of online training but is of little value for those practicing for a few years.

I recently checked out this book in hopes to spruce up my training program and resources for my online faculty. I got more than I bargained for with this book! The ideas and resources packed within these 175 pages have added 5 new projects on my list including a readiness quiz for online faculty, an online faculty mentor program, an advanced online workshop, and a course quality rubric. Great suggestions by these amazing authors once again!
