The controversial and provocative personal testimony of an urban guerrilla. How It All Began is the personal testimony of Michael "Bommi" Baumann, a man who, in the late 1960s and early '70s, was a member of the June 2nd Movement, one of the most spectacular urban guerrilla organizations in West Berlin.

The book acquired considerable notoriety when it appeared in Germany in 1975 and the police made an ill-conceived attempt to confiscate and suppress it.

Rambling recollections of West Germany's terrorist scene, by a working-class youth who broke away from it and is now in hiding. Styled as an indictment of contemporary society, the book is largely an expression of unfocused anger-with a good measure of self-pity beneath the flip surface.

Baumann was a construction worker. In the 1960s, he got in touch with the West Berlin student movement and with Kommune 1. His views became more radical after various experiences with police, media and bureaucracy.
