This book has now been added to my personal "best books I own" list. It is clearly distinct and different from Viktor Frankl's Man's Search for Meaning, and Cloud and Townsend's How People Grow, both literarily and philosophically. Nevertheless, I would compare it with these other great works because all three have challenged my philosophical, theological and psychological views on the deepest questions of psychology, relationship and human behavior. For this reason, I give this work the highest rating possible, and would absolutely recommend it.

As someone who has worked in counseling for 15 years and worked closely with families for 25, I almost feel like I owe an apology to those who I worked with without the benefit of this work. As a marriage and family therapist-in-training, I have found this to be one of the best books for clinical guidance. I started my training program last year believing in - and eventually using - Sue Johnson's EFT and EFFT therapy models due to my interest in attachment theory based therapies; however, I quickly realized that attachment theory and attachment-derived models only told half of the story, the story of love. Then, I moved to Contextual Family Therapy as written about by Dr. Ivan Boszormenyi-Nagy, which I found amazingly useful. Still, I felt it was an incomplete picture of how to get at all of the core issues in marriage and family therapy in my work with clients because it seemed to only paint a picture of the element of trustworthiness in relationships. When a graduate student friend of mine recommended the book The New Contextual Therapy by Terry Hargrave, I delved into the book and read it with fervor, and quickly moved to apply it to my clinical work. After I had finished that book I looked up other work by Terry Hargrave, who I've found to be an incredible theorist, writer, and therapist. Eventually I came upon this book, Restoration Therapy, and I have not been able to put it down. It integrates emerging brain science with Contextual Family Therapy and attachment theory and other related ideas to form what I believe is the most complete picture of how to conduct marriage and family therapy that is currently available. I will continue to practice restoration therapy for what I believe to be years to come, and I look forward to possibly researching the model as I pursue a Ph.D. in the coming years.

If you are a marriage and family therapist-in-training, whether at the master's or doctoral level, I urge you to pick up this book and give it a read. I have found this type of therapy applicable to every single clinical case that I have and have had in the past, something my other models of therapy were not capable of providing, and I feel that I have finally found something that is a reliable guide for my work as a clinician. This theory is fresh, rooted in empirical evidence and sound science, and gets at the true core of family and attachment and trust issues. In essence, I think this is the best guide available to therapists-in-training looking to pursue work in the relational dimension.
