We assess the relative effectiveness of two different active learning complements to traditional lecture-based learning. Using a large introductory class at a large public university, we conducted an experiment designed to evaluate whether active learning approaches provide a significant improvement in a student’s short-term retention of material over only attending a standard large lecture.

Students can easily misstep when they first begin to do research. Leanne C. Powner’s new title Empirical Research and Writing: A Student′s Practical Guide provides valuable advice and guidance on conducting and writing about empirical research. Chapter by chapter, students are guided through the key steps in the research process. Written in a lively and engaging manner and with a dose of humor, this practical text shows students exactly how to choose a research topic, conduct a literature review, make research design decisions, collect and analyze data, and then write up and present the results. The book′s approachable style and just-in-time information delivery make it a text students will want to read, and its wide-ranging and surprisingly sophisticated coverage will make it an important resource for their later coursework.

If you are a Poli Sci student YOU NEED THIS BOOK. This is the methods book that I wish someone had given me my first year of undergrad. Powner is informative, entertaining, and makes the material as clear and digestible as possible. 10/10 would recommend.
This was for school, it did what it needed too. Nothing great or bad about it.
I have assigned this book in both undergraduate research methods classes. Simply put, students LOVE it. It gives them the tools they need to carry out their own empirical research project. Students routinely mention how much they appreciated the practical advice and how the book provided everything they needed to produce a well-researched, polished paper. I love that I FINALLY have a book I can turn to that explains things like how to ask a question, what a good lit review should do, and even data collection! I also really appreciated the section on peer review as I do that every term and students are often unsure as to how to make it productive. I also loved the questions included in each chapter--made for great class discussion material! I cannot recommend this book highly enough. It is one that will serve as an invaluable resource for students to use in my class and beyond.
