The anthropology of law is a key subfield within anthropology. Mark Goodale introduces central problems in the anthropology of law, traces the development of the field, and builds on the legacy of its intellectual history. Over the past twenty-five years, anthropologists have studied and analyzed the ways in which new forms of law – such as human rights – have reshaped important questions of citizenship, indigenous movements, and, biotechnology, among many others. This is a book about anthropological theory, but it is neither a history of anthropological thought, such as The Rise of Anthropological Theory (Harris 1968) or A Century of Controversy (Service 1985), nor is it a catalogue of anthropological paradigms, such as High Points in Anthropology (Bohannon and Glazer 1973) or Perspectives in Cultural Anthropology (Applebaum 1987). In 1987, in a text on anthropological theory entitled The Human Enterprise, I offered a generally favorable assessment of interpretive anthropology (Lett 1987:11026), even though I called attention to several of the paradigm's shortcomings.
