Ethical Dimensions of Public Policy Henry Shue

Ethical Dimensions of Public Policy Henry Shue. This Oxford Handbook of Public Policy aspires to provide a rounded understanding of what it is to make and to suVer, to study and to critique, the programs and policies by which oYcers of the state attempt to rule. Ruling is an assertion of the will, an attempt to exercise control, to shape the world. In trying to convey a sense of these changes in the way we have come to approach public policy over the past half-century, the chapters in this Handbook (and still more this Introduction to it) focus on the big picture rather than minute details.

Every American is impacted by public policy issues, yet most of us do not fully understand them. What are public policies, and why are they necessary? What types of public policies are there, and which have been most controversial? Building on the success of the popular first edition, the author uses an historical approach to answer these and many other fundamental questions, often through the lens of different strands of policy theory. He illuminates the intricate interactions of the dynamic social and political forces that result in the creation, maintenance, and reform of public policy. In an accessible and engaging writing style, Wilson effectively examines and contrasts different positions on controversial issues, provides a wide range of examples, and fills in important details. Landmark legal cases and their policy ramifications are clearly explained, and a list of websites at the close of each chapter points readers to the most up-to-date sources of information on current public policy issues. This book helped me in a class which was taught without any regard to fully grasping the material. With this in mind, the books layout saved me a great deal of late nights and sleepless days. Everything is broken down wonderfully and into easy to notate sections that flow in a logical order. Besides this, the content is very thoroughly explained and laid out and I have no quarrels with the way the book was set up for the learning of public policy. I'd never read it for fun and it's absolutely dry to the point of causing emotional distress, but this is an academic book, so you can't expect anything else. That said, for sheer information, it's done very well. I wish all my academic books were as well laid out as this one.

This is a must-read book for the students of public policy. What is public policy? Why is it important? What types of public policies are there, and which have been most controversial? This book answers these and other questions in greater details. This must-read book is very highly recommended, honestly.
