The purpose of this book was to assemble a comprehensive overview of the development of transgenic technology in agricultural animals. The first chapter provides a brief history on the development of transgenic technology beginning with the early attempts to culture embryos, and leading up to nuclear transfer using embryonic stem cells in sheep. It also provides a list of vertebrate species that have been genetically engineered.

However, several lines of transgenic farm animals and fish could be potentially useful genotypes for use in production agriculture, including GH pigs, phytase pigs, lysozyme goats, lactoferrin cows, and lactalbumin pigs. To date, none of these lines have yet been approved for human consumption and thus have not made it into production. This book examines how biotechnology can improve livestock breeding and farming, and thereby also animal products. James D.

This change has severed the average American’s relationship with the land that sustains them, and people need to rekindle that relationship to reverse the current destructive agricultural trends.

In the past decade, a number of advances have been made in genetic engineering as applied to farmed animals. This book has been developed from invited presentations at a conference held in California in August 1997, to address this issue. It is written by representatives from the leading laboratories involved in attempts to improve agriculturally important mammals, poultry and fish. Current knowledge, methodology, technical improvements and successes in the applications of transgenic technology to a range of animals which are important in agriculture are brought together for the first time under one cover. This book is essential reading for research workers in animal genetics, breeding and biotechnology.

Simple
The book contains excellent reviews on the subject of transgenic cattle, swine, chicken and fish. Different approaches are considered and merits of each are discussed. Practical methods are considered, but for the detailed step by step instructions you will need to dig into bibliography (excellent, by the way).
