As a scientific discipline, psychiatry has enormous breadth. It comprises both the technical, as in the frontier-expanding research in molecular genetics and the human and personal, as in the insights and support therapeutically given when a clinician treats a patient. The Introductory Textbook of Psychiatry equips the clinical student with a sure and knowledgeable grasp of the many facets of psychiatry. Now in its fifth edition, this best-selling book has been revised and updated to reflect the latest advancements in the field. Guiding readers in an easy-to-follow, conversational style, the expert authors and teachers divide the text into three parts: Part I focuses on the background of psychiatry, including diagnosis and classification, interview and assessment techniques, and the neurobiology and genetics of mental illness. Part II introduces all DSM disorders, arranged by diagnostic category. Part III addresses special topics, such as legal issues, child psychiatry, psychotherapy, and psychopharmacology. The book also includes insightful case vignettes, valuable key points, helpful self-assessment questions, useful tables and charts throughout, and a glossary of commonly used terms. The Introductory Textbook of Psychiatry, Fifth Edition, is a comprehensive textbook made for learning. This relevant and essential tool will give its readers an advantageous start in the exciting field of contemporary psychiatry.

This book is old as its based on the DSM 4 criteria. That being said other than chapter rearrangement and re-naming, I can't tell much difference bw the 5th and 6th (the newer version) versions of the book. There are small text boxes that list the criteria and these can always be looked up.

I found this a great reference book. It outlines concepts and DSM criteria well and gets to the important points, which also makes it a good review tool before exams. This book is something I probably will use when I do rounds 3rd year of med school. Also appreciate the liberal but not excessive use of examples to illustrate the disorders and certain aspects of them.

This is great for learning psychiatry. It has all of the DSM-IV criteria in easy-to-read charts and then explains in the text each criteria while giving examples. This is not light reading, however, and if you're wanting psychology this is not the book for you. I'm a medical student and it was recommended reading by the faculty, so glad they chose this!

This was the assigned text for a second year PA student rotation in psych which I now oversee. I am trained as a family medicine MD, and I think it includes a lot of very good information for primary care in particular, with understandable explanations of disease and treatment. There is a slightly conservative bias, I feel, with comments such as a condition being related to problems with the mother, not "parent" or "caregiver." Overall it is quite inclusive and understandable, with good organization.

I haven't used it much, but it is a nice, concise book for psychiatry-related studies. I'm not 100% sure I would have bought, however, if I had to pay for it myself.

very good textbook
excellent resource for reference purposes. Not the best for just sitting and reading. Very dense. More useful for those specializing in psych than medical students
