Diseases of children. By Hugh Jolly and Malcolm I. Levene

Diseases of children. Oxford, Blackwell Scientific Publications, 1985. Although the book is clearly British, authors Jolly and Levene have taken care to address international issues, paying special attention to the problems of infants and children in developing countries. For example, while advocating breast feeding for all infants, the authors stress that the benefits will be different depending on sociocultural factors. In Western communities, the authors stress the potential benefits for the mother-child relationship.

Children do not tend to present to a doctor or medical student complaining of bronchiectasis of hyperthyroidism. It is more likely that the child or parent will describe the symptoms of a chronic cough or the failure of the child to thrive in infancy. However, existing undergraduate literature shows that the textbooks are primarily structured by body system which then leads into a discussion of the various diseases. This is an artifical approach to teaching and does not stack up with medical practice, nor the trends in medical education.

"Diseases of Children" is a text which aims to show the reader how to combine caring for the child with curing the disorder. In the fifth edition Malcolm Levene added skills in neonatology, and his assumption of overall responsibility for Jolly's Diseases of Children is reflected in further change. This remains a book which focuses primarily on childhood disease and its treatment but which retains the compassionate touch essential to the care of sick children. This book is intended for undergraduate and postgraduate medical students, junior hospital doctors, and general practitioners. An ELBS/LPBB edition is available
