I have a PhD in psychology from a tier 1 university and took this course as a refresher. I really like the diversity of the authors' perspectives on mental illnesses. The range is broad but balanced. The research on mental illnesses is significantly outdated though. So much of the data on everything has changed so much. It's a good read, but won't prepare you for medical or nursing school.

The problem with publishing is that the research is already outdated when the books are published (sometimes 5-7 years behind).

Overall, the positives outweigh the negatives. But be aware that the text adamantly attempts to push future DSM versions using "new" ways of diagnosing. At the end of the day it's all about corporations making and saving $$$, so just read between the lines and you'll be fine.

Got this textbook for class, which was a required reading. There are pros and cons to it being "binder ready". The pro is that I could take each chapter out and bring that set to class in a smaller binder, which was much more convenient to carry than the entire textbook. The con is that the pages are super thin and it tears out really easily even with the gentlest of page turning. The book is written in a manner that is easy to understand and or professor lectures straight from it. It also breaks down all the new classifications from the DSM-V as well for each disorder, which is helpful.

For some reason I didn't realize it was going to just be 1000 loose pages, but that was obviously stated on the purchase page. Buyers like myself should read more carefully. For what it is, its a great buy. Good price, fast shipping; but make sure you have a binder ready for when it comes, so pages don't get messy! Also, the pages a very very thin, as most textbook pages are. You should be VERY careful when turning pages in the binder so they don't rip.

I ordered this book for the class I needed. The Kindle Digital was the way to go. It was a cheaper option, and it held up way better than the loose leaf version my classmates had (loose leaf books fall apart and get ruined so fast!). For my particular class, this book was vital, very helpful, and was fortunate enough to have the DSM-5 updates in it so soon after the DMS-5 was put into print. But again, kindle version is the way to go!

Although I have years of experience under my belt I find this book to be great help in refreshing my head after many years away from grad school.
It is good to keep it on your shelf and refer to it. You don't have to get the latest edition this one covers everything. Human behavior does not need a new edition now and then like a book. I recommending this book to seasonal or new therapist in the field

Awesome, awesome book. Extremely engaging. I felt that it was a little opinionated, but not in a bad way. It's fairly easy to read and it does well in explaining everything. This book really helped me appreciate abnormal psychology a lot more. Another great thing about it is that the materials are extremely up-to-date. It was a textbook that I actually didn't mind reading at all.
I only rented this book, but I wish I had the money to buy it!

I vary rarely post reviews, especially negative ones, but I was pretty disappointed with the condition of this book. The used textbook I purchased was supposed to be in "good" condition but I would classify it more as medicor. Though the pages themselves were fine and few were writen on the rest of the book was not. Upon arrival I found the outside spine to look as if it was sliced, and on the inside the binding was damaged and the pages were literally starting to fall out. Unfortunatly I will have to return this book and repurchase another which means I will not have it for the start of class. Very disappointing.
This is my favorite psychology book out there. It pulls direct content (word-for-word) from the DSM-5. Oltmanns explains things in a way that is easy to understand but still at a higher level. Extremely informative. You get sucked in like a novel
