Newman may be considered the most outstandingly original and creative English religious thinker of the nineteenth century. Here is by far the clearest and most concise introduction to his life and thought ever written. Avery Dulles is himself one of the most important living Roman Catholic theologians. Outstanding as biblical scholar, preacher and practical Church reformer, Calvin intended all his work to serve the Word of God. Although couched in 16th century terms, his theology drew on the wealth of previous Christian thought and continues to be relevant to the situation of the Church today. This book is a comprehensive introduction to the whole range of Calvin's theology.

Cardinal John Henry Newman is remembered as one of the greatest preachers of the 19th century. His influence is unrivalled as he drew enormous crowds to hear his Sunday afternoon sermons at St Mary's at Oxford. Eye witnesses report him as having little biblical exegesis, reading from a manuscript with his eyes down, speaking quickly in a monotone voice broken up by long pauses and occasionally not even being loud enough to reach everyone in the room.

Newman may be considered the most outstandingly original and creative English religious thinker of the nineteenth century. Here is by far the clearest and most concise introduction to his life and thought ever written. Avery Dulles is himself one of the most important living Roman Catholic theologians. The combination of this author and this subject is in itself a matter for celebration.Newman has countless admirers. Since the publication of Geoffrey Faber's Oxford Apostles many have also attempted to debunk him. But here is an account of Newman that is truly balanced and shows him to be as much a prophet for our times as he was for his own. Though unsuccessful in most of his undertakings in the Catholic Church during his life time, his genius has come to be more and more recognized after his death, and his influence can hardly be exaggerated. While writing this study of Cardinal Newman, Avery Dulles was himself created a Cardinal.

John Henry Newman: A Biography truly is a thick brick of a book, yet beautifully designed for accessible reading. Ian Ker has achieved an enormous accomplishment, distilling the life this complex, hugely influential figure. Ker provides the curious with a definitive, exacting rendition of Newman's life. With enormous precision, Ker peels back page after page of Newman's spiritual journey, capturing the essence of his dry wit, superlative intelligence, and spiritual rigors. John Henry Newman was a catalyst of the Oxford movement, instrumental in influencing J.R.R. Tolkien's mother. After she died too young, her boys were nurtured by Newman's Birmingham Oratory. We have savored much of Tolkien's writing on art and creativity, including "Tree and Leaf" and "On Fairy Stories" contained in The Tolkien Reader.

It took us ages to plow through John Cornwell's poorly executed, oddly organized, and politically motivated book, "Newman's Unquiet Grave: The Reluctant Saint." Ian Ker's vivid, detailed biography is a breath of fresh air. Highly recommended!

"Even on the ... legends of a popular mythology He casts His shadow, and is dimly discerned in the ode or epic, as in troubled water or in fantastic dreams. All that is good, all that is true, all that is beautiful, all that is beneficent, be it great or small, be it perfect or fragmentary, natural as well as supernatural, moral as well as material, comes from Him" (Newman).

Ker's work on Newman is a masterpiece. Beautiful yet thorough, Ker's writing skillfully navigates 19th century Britain's theological and ecclesial waters. Very worth reading.

Have enjoyed the detail on Cardinal Newman and the times he lived. Well worth the time reading this informative book.

This a definitive intellectual history of Newman's thought and life.It is not for the casual reader but more for the professional historian or someone seriously interested in the subject. Newman was a major voice in the Oxford Movement, an advocate for a more educated Catholic laity and a voice of reason and moderation against the more ultramontane members of the English Catholic hierarchy. In short, a man of great faith, intellect, and passion for truth.

This biography of Blessed Cardinal Newman is very satisfying with respect to its content. Unfortunately, the hard-bound edition of the book is of poor quality. The spine is paper thin and, together with the sideboards, threatens to become detached upon each opening. Thus, the ironic sensation of not wanting to open it. I hope that the more recently released paperback edition will be less awkward to handle. Ker's treatment of Newman's life is so focused upon primary sources and details that I sometimes found myself wishing that he would pull the lens back a bit, giving us some context and interpretation. But then I would just slip back into the stream of Newman's life. On the whole, the unobtrusiveness of this biographer is a boon to the reader.

A good description of the highlights of Newman's life and career. More of an introduction to Newman, it doesn't reach the level of a comprehensive discussion and analysis of Newman's life and works. Occasionally marred by the author's conservative political prejudices.
I received my book without the dust cover. I've been a costumer since 1998, never happened before.

Book is great, by the way, very well written, comprehensive
