Emanuel Stickelberger was a businessman who wrote historical novels (Calvin and Zwingli). The University of Basel granted him the honorary degree of Doctor of Theology. I got this book a couple of weeks ago and finished it within just a few days. Stickelberger's treatment of John Calvin reveals the pastor, more than the theologian, and the literary style in which Stickelberger writes really engages the reader and at points evokes an emotive response to elements of Calvin's life. I'd recommend this book to anyone interested in getting a basic overview of the life of John Calvin.

In mathematics, Stickelberger's theorem is a result of algebraic number theory, which gives some information about the Galois module structure of class groups of cyclotomic fields. A special case was first proven by Ernst Kummer (1847) while the general result is due to Ludwig Stickelberger (1890). Let Km denote the mth cyclotomic field, . the extension of the rational numbers obtained by adjoining the mth roots of unity to ℚ (where m ≥ 2 is an integer).

Few great men have been so consistently misunderstood as Calvin and the eminent Swiss man of letters, Emanuel Stickelberger, throws a vivid light upon both the man and his times. Stickelberger sees the pale, frail man of Geneva against the background of the tumultuous times in which he lived. His iron will, constant struggle with ill health, utter dedication to his task, almost super-human capacity for work and indifference to financial reward, are all arrestingly portrayed. Stickelberger paints his portrait with a remarkable economy of words and with a fine sense of drama. The result is a vivid and fascinating study of a man and an epoch, that holds the reader's attention from the first page to the last.

Global Progression
Calvin: A Life was a great biography. It showed the reader what Calvin had to do in order to get to his triumphal days. It tells about the enemies of Calvin and what they were arguing against. When the book talked about what Calvin did during one year of work with the church, it amazed me. Calvin was one hard working man. It also tells about his death.
