The American government has made it plain that we are not moved by any desire for gain for ourselves. We have nothing to win through the war except the assurance that our nation will be safe. If Germany had a government which the people controlled, then the United States could trust promises of that government.

This little volume is the result of the interest shown by pupils, teachers, and the general public in a series of talks on the causes of the great European war which were given by the author in the fall of 1914. The audiences were widely different in character.
This book reads very easily an fast,it provides useful information on the history of Europe that is useful to understand the tremendous differences between neighbors in this continent. The analysis of the causes of war is superficial but it is a good start for beginners in the subject and a pleasant memory for "conaisseurs". history is a difficult matter.
