MARK T. Unfortunately for me, way to much of the book is dedicated to the very recent (in 1999) history, while periods like the entire time from the fall of Roman influence in the Netherlands at around 400 AD to the rise of House Burgundy in the 1400s get less than 5 pages. Instead we spend time learning the exact population density (in 1999) of the provinces, or exactly how many miles of roads it has, or the exact amount in benefits a widow might expect to receive from the state after her spouse dies.

This engagingly written history provides a contemporary overview of Holland's geography, economy, political system, and society. Chapters arranged chronologically trace the history and culture of the nation from the Ice Age to the new post-Cold War world. Chapters on recent Dutch history show how Holland has claimed a leading role in social change: the Dutch have authorized euthanasia, socialized medicine, and legalized soft drugs. A selection of brief biographical sketches will introduce the reader to many of the important Dutch personalities throughout Holland's history, and a bibliographical essay will help the researcher to locate recommended books and other materials for further reading.

A nice way to get a light grasp on the Netherlands, for someone who knows little to nothing about the country. It actually leans a bit more on contemporary Dutch culture than I would have expected, but that's no bad thing.

I've got the hard-back verion, and if you don't hold it carefully, pages can come unstuck (they're not hard to put back in, thou').

Quite a good history otherwise.

As someone who enjoys learning about history I thought it was about time I learn about where my own great-grandparents had come from. There weren't many choices but this one looked promising. The whole book reminded me of nothing so much as a grade school textbook filled with simple facts like that that are easy to regurgitate in a test setting. Which wouldn't have been so bad, it is a short book after all, except again it's almost all based on caring what those figures are in 98 or 99. World War II gets barely more than 2 pages, including 4 sentences over probably the most famous victim of the Holocaust, Anne Frank. And one of those is a sentence stating how it's still discussed today who exactly betrayed them, again focusing on the recent instead of the actual history.

Plus 1999 was an especially unfortunate time to publish this book. This means the euro hadn't taken affect yet (it's mentioned as something that's coming), and it's 2 years early of the global war on terror starting. This book not only aged badly, it did so amazingly quickly. The financial collapse of '08 doesn't help matters.

On the plus side, you do get a sense for Dutch culture and there are some interesting facts in there.

Almost one third of this book is devoted to background, such as geography, econony, political system, and society. It is space and time well spent. The entire book reads quite easily, and I often had a hard time putting it down.
