In the field of epistemology, the problem of the criterion is an issue regarding the starting point of knowledge. This is a separate and more fundamental issue than the regress argument found in discussions on justification of knowledge. American philosopher Roderick Chisholm in his Theory of Knowledge details the problem of the criterion with two sets of questions: What do we know? or What is the extent of our knowledge? How do we know? or What is the criterion of knowing?

The Problem of the Criterion is the ancient problem of the wheel or the diallelus For instance, Robert Amico (1993) argues that Chisholm mistakenly takes himself to be discussing the same problem as Sextus Empiricus when he considers the Problem.

The Problem of the Criterion is the ancient problem of the wheel or the diallelus. It comes to us from Book 2 of Sextus Empiricus’ Outlines of Pyrrhonism. Sextus presents the Problem of the Criterion as a major issue in the debate between the Academic Skeptics and the Stoics. For instance, Robert Amico (1993) argues that Chisholm mistakenly takes himself to be discussing the same problem as Sextus Empiricus when he considers the Problem of the Criterion. Richard Fumerton (2008) points out that there are at least two versions of the Problem of the Criterion.

This book offers the first historical treatment and analytic analysis of the problem of the criterion. It provides analyses of the ancient and modern characterizations of the problem and a resolution of each. My purpose is to show that there are at least two versions of the problem, one posed by a Pyrrhonian sceptic and one by a dogmatic sceptic. I show that both versions have a dissolution. Then, by examining the presuppositions of the dogmatic sceptic, I demonstrate that the sceptic's position is self-undermining.
